About Aarhus – a small guide to the city

When you book accommodation at Wakeup Aarhus, M.P. Bruuns Gade, you can look forward to a stay in the second largest city of Denmark, which offers a wide range of experiences for children and adults. In fact, the city’s historical roots go back to the time of the Vikings – ironically contrasting with the youthful atmosphere of the city, as Aarhus has the highest concentration of students across Denmark.

Our central location at M.P. Bruuns Gade provides the perfect settings for an exciting stay in the city centre with everything just around the corner. In Aarhus, you will find world-class museums, high-level gastronomy, lots of shopping opportunities and last but not least several recreational areas ranging from forests to harbour fronts and beaches.

At Wakeup Aarhus, we focus on giving you the best premises for a nice visit to Aarhus, no matter if you are planning a family trip, a romantic getaway or business meetings in the city.

Below, we give you a few suggestions as to what you can see and explore within the city and the neighbouring area when staying at Wakeup Aarhus.

Cultural experiences and attractions in Aarhus:

Aarhus, the European Capital of Culture 2017, offers an exciting range of cultural experiences, covering exhibitions, events and performances. Most of the top attractions are located within walking distance from our hotel. A perfect starting point for all culture enthusiasts is the infamous museum ARoS, which is situated just 900 metres from Wakeup Aarhus. ARoS is an exciting adventure house for children and adults and known for its iconic rainbow ’Your rainbow panorama’ at the top of the museum, created by artist Olafur Eliasson. ’Your rainbow panorama’ gives a fantastic and colourful view of Aarhus and is a magical experience for people of all ages.

Within the same geographical area, you will find Musikhuset Aarhus which offers an impressive program, covering exciting performances throughout the year. At Musikhuset Aarhus, you can experience anything from pop concerts to opera performed by local and international artists. Architectonically, the venue is an exciting place too. It has a 2,000m2 large foyer of glass and a beautiful green park surrounding it, which creates a very special atmosphere.

Are you into full speed and adventure? In Aarhus, that can be remedied too. Did you know that Aarhus has its very own Tivoli Gardens? Tivoli Friheden is the name of the popular amusement park in Aarhus which has a scenic location at the Marselisborg Forests just a short walk from the city centre. Tivoli Friheden has 40 different amusements, playgrounds, stalls and much more, which makes it easy to spend a full day with your family at the amusement park. In addition, its perfect location just 2 kilometres away from Wakeup Aarhus, M.P. Bruuns Gade makes it easy for you to reach the park in no time by train, car or bike.

A nice 20 minutes’ walk from our hotel brings you to the world-famous ‘museum’ The Old City (Den Gamle By), which is located right next to Aarhus’ Botanical Gardens. The Old City invites you to a fascinating time travel where you can explore old stores, backyards and repair shops dating back to the 1500s. Meet people dressed in apparel of that time cutting firewood, fetching water and cooking – you can even interact with them. The Old City provides an insight into the early history of Denmark, and in fact, about 500,000 visitors go to the Old City annually. During Christmas, The Old City lights up with charming Christmas decorations from the old days, which creates a magical atmosphere in this city area.

If you are looking for a nice outing in the neighbouring area without too much planning, we recommend a guided city tour where you can delve into the city’s history and get a personalised experience of the city and its many interesting areas, attractions and museums.

If you have several days in Aarhus and are game for a longer trip to outer Aarhus, you can visit Moesgaard Museum (MOMU), where the past comes alive. The museum’s exhibitions, architecture and scenery have attracted immense attention internationally. MOMU is located in beautiful natural surroundings overlooking the forest and the sea, where you can enjoy some fresh air. Around the museum, you will find several nice trails, including ‘The Prehistory Trail’ which is marked with white stones adorned with a red dot. The trail takes you on an adventurous walk in one of the most beautiful parts of Eastern Jutland’s nature. On this trail, you will also pass reconstructed prehistoric houses and a burial site from the Stone Age.

Aarhus offers many green parks where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air. Closest to Wakeup Aarhus, M.P. Bruuns Gade is ‘Rådhusparken’, which is situated close to Aarhus City Hall and the art museum ARoS.

If you are planning a nice trip to the cinema, you have different options: Øst for Paradis, Nordisk Film Biografer Aarhus or CinemaxX, the latter located on the same street as our hotel.
